IS FACEBOOK AND WHATSAPP DOWN SERIES
The series of failures, from the BGP outage itself through to the way it blocked staff accessing internal communications systems, remote access, and even physical access itself, should probably result in Facebook federating these structures a bit more so they're not all reliant on the same system.

One would imagine Facebook would introduce some new processes now to prevent this kind of cascade of errors in the future. Perhaps there should have been better processes in place, but it can be hard to recognise single points of failure - especially when they're based on such a core part of the networking infrastructure - until they fail.įacebook down: 10 memes poking fun at the outage as world flocks to Twitter insteadĭespite the prominence of Facebook's platforms when it comes to spreading most conspiracy theories, unfounded claims that those platforms were down as the result of a hack managed to spread without it.Īt the same time as the outage there were some posts on underground hacking forums claiming to be offering user data stolen from Facebook, but most experts assess that these are opportunistic scams rather than real breaches. It is by the far the longest outage for a major platform in recent memory. Shouldn't a big company have better processes?

The outage meant that they couldn't authenticate to the premises and get inside. The access cards that Facebook use to physically enter its premises were also dependent on the internal systems working properly. The only solution was to physically go to the data centres and refresh things from there - but there was a problem with this too, according to a now-deleted post on Reddit believed to have been posted by a Facebook staff member. Then when staff tried to sign-in to third party apps to communicate, if they used the "Log In with Facebook" option they discovered this was down too. It took down Facebook Workplace, the internal communications platform used by its staff, according to numerous reports. Unfortunately, it seems that Facebook was using the same network for staff to access the network remotely, meaning that the outage prevented them fixing the outage. He said: “To all the people and businesses around the world who depend on us, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused by today’s outage across our platforms.Normally it would be quite straightforward to fix this kind of outage - you start advertising where your servers are and routers begin connecting to you again. Posting on Facebook, Santosh Janardhan said sorry for the outage and blamed “configuration changes on the backbone routers that co-ordinate network traffic between our data centres”.

Why did Facebook go down?įacebook blamed a "faulty configuration change" for the issues in a post on Tuesday morning from its vice president of infrastructure. "Given the level of back-ups, regional co-location servers, the Facebook FNA node network, their data centre fabric, their neural-network fabric interconnecting data centre and machine learnings applications – this kind of global outage should, in 2021, be inconceivable - or at least lasting minutes," Neil Campling, co-head of Mirabaud Securities' Global Thematic Group, told The National. The memo also revealed a team of employees was dispatched to a California data centre to attempt to manually restart the social media company's servers. "We've been working hard to restore access to our apps and services and are happy to report they are coming back online now," the company's spokesman, Andy Stone, said in a tweet. Across the globe, users of Facebook and its sister sites were unable to load content or were greeted with error messages.įacebook and its affiliated apps began to return online for some users about 5:45pm ET, around six hours after the incident began. The error-reporting website Downdetector showed the services first stopped working around 11:45am Eastern Time (7:40pm in the UAE). "To every small and large business, family, and individual who depends on us, I'm sorry." " Facebook services coming back online now - may take some time to get to 100 per cent," its chief technology officer Mike Schroepfer said in a tweet. Facebook on Monday began restoring access to its platform as well as to Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger after a global outage lasting about six hours shut out many of its 2.7 billion users, left some of the company’s employees idle and prompted a public apology.
